Dubuffet
Jean Dubuffet
Pantyhose/Tights sculpture.
Materials:
A wooden square block with 4 wholes drilledd into the corners
A wire coat hanger (from the dry cleaner), straightened
1/2 leg of a pantyhose with a knot/foot at one end (per sculpture)

One of my all time favourite projects.
I have made this project with chidren 5 to 10 years old over the past 3 years and they all look different and amazing.
Tip: For younger ones it is easier to have a "theme" like I did in one of my groups: Intruducing the artist Jean Dubuffet. This makes it easier for them to focus and create a design and it cuts down on time. Giving them a free choice of "whatever you feel like" adds around 1 -2 hrs of extra project time! Did this with the second group!

![]() Getting startedStep 1: Push the endings of the straightened wire into the pre-drilled wholes of the wooden block, secure with glue gun. Step 2: Once it is dry, shape the wire whichever way you want it to look. Step 3: Once happy with the outcome, pull the pantyhose over it with the knot/foot at the top. Tie a knot at the side of the wooden block. Note the wood needs to be completely covered by the stocking | ![]() 3D sculptureStep 4: Give it two thick coatings of white glue, let it dry for 24 - 48 hours. (Grade 1 & 2) | ![]() 3D sculptureStep 5: Once it is dry it has a rough, almost solid surface, which is easy to paint on. Draw a pattern with markers first, then fill with acrylic paint. (Grade 2) |
